Psychotherapeutic University Outpatient Clinic for Children and Young People opened at Leipzig University

31. January 2018

In addition to the psychotherapeutic university outpatient clinic for adults, there has also been a special outpatient clinic for children and adolescents at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Leipzig for a few days now. Both individual sessions with the child, as well as joint discussions with parents or other caregivers are offered according to the needs and objectives.

“The therapies are cognitive-behavioural-therapeutic, but also elements of other forms of therapy are included in the treatment plan. The close linking of diagnostics and therapy with research work on the development, course and treatment of mental disorders ensures that diagnostic methods and treatment options are always up to date with the latest scientific developments,” says the head of the outpatient clinic, Prof. Dr. Julian Schmitz from the working group on clinical child and adolescent psychology. The research focus of the working group is on the development and maintenance factors of anxiety disorders in children.

The outpatient clinic is part of the interdisciplinary Leipzig Research Centre for Early Childhood Development (LFE). In addition to Schmitz, Julia Ebhardt, Johanna Posth and Mareen Kirchgeorg will carry out the diagnosis and treatment of children from infancy and adolescents up to 21 years of age. Therapy is possible from the age of 15 without the consent of the parents. The field of clinical child and adolescent psychology is a strongly growing field in which most of the newly created professorships in psychology emerge. “Demand is very high, we are already in great demand,” explains Schmitz. “Parents and their children can approach us with a variety of difficulties. We treat a wide range of mental illnesses, such as attention deficit and hyperactive behaviour, depression, school problems, eating disorders or excretion disorders, “he says. The costs of the treatment are usually covered by public and private health insurance companies. All employees of the outpatient clinic are subject to professional secrecy.
