4 QUESTIONS TO…” – Who is actually behind the LFE? This section is all about our staff. Today we introduce you to Dr. Julia Fuchs. She is the newly appointed research group leader of the Research Group Acquisition of Pragmatics and has been a junior professor of German Linguistics – Pragmatics at the University of Leipzig since June 2022.
- WHAT ARE YOUR TASKS IN THE AG PRAGMATIC ACQUISITION?
The Research Group Acquisition of Pragmatics at the Leipzig Research Centre for Early Childhood Development has an interface with the Junior Professorship for German Linguistics – Pragmatics at the Institute of German Studies at the University of Leipzig, which I have held since June 2022. As head of the WG Pragmatics Acquisition, I provide impulses in terms of content while remaining open to the entire thematic breadth of the field of pragmatics acquisition. I conduct my own studies on irony acquisition in typically developing German-speaking children and apply for external funding for further research on irony acquisition in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
- WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE TOPIC “DEVELOPMENT IN EARLY CHILDHOOD”?
I pursue questions about children’s pragmatics acquisition with great enthusiasm and fascination. And pragmatics acquisition is very closely intertwined with development in early childhood, insofar as it interacts with many skills that develop in early childhood, e.g. theory-of-mind skills or joint attention. Pragmatic acquisition and early childhood cannot be thought of in isolation from each other.
- WHAT CHILDHOOD MEMORY DO YOU MOST LIKE TO THINK BACK TO?
I especially like to think back to the many very nice experiences and adventures with my family: to my kind parents, who were always there for me (and still are), and to my great older brother, from whom I was able to learn a lot.
- WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LEIPZIG?
For me, Leipzig is a city with an attractive university that offers very good working conditions and interdisciplinary exchange opportunities with other scientists – not least because of its connection to the Leipzig Research Centre for Early Childhood Development. I also appreciate Leipzig’s very rich cultural offerings, which I like to take advantage of in my free time.
We are pleased to welcome Jun.-Prof. Dr. Julia Fuchs to the LFE.
