LFE Colloquium talk by Dr. Daniel Schmerse (Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education)

On Friday, October 26, 2018, a new Research Colloquium takes place at the LFE.
Dr. Daniel Schmerse (Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education at Kiel University & Leibniz Center of Excellence for Early Childhood Education) will give a talk.

The presentation is entitled: Effects of home and preschool learning environments on early language development

Children’s language development is fundamentally shaped by their learning environments. During early childhood, the family setting and the setting of early childhood education and care (ECEC) constitute the primary learning environments for children. Drawing on a large-scale sample of 335 day care centers and 1,331 children and their families, the talk addresses (a) to what extent the quality of home learning environment (HLE) and the quality of ECEC influence children’s language development between 2 and 4 years of age and (b) whether ECEC quality has differential effects on the development of children from different social backgrounds. The talk will also address how composition of the peer group in day care centers affects language development.
